Winter 2013 Anime Mini Reviews – A Season Full of Meh and GJ-bu

YamanoSusume5

I will be trying out a new and shorter format for my future seasonal posts, so it would be nice if you could tell if you like it or not. The reason for this is that I do not want to spend hours writing them. Because even if I love doing these posts, the time it takes to write them could be spent on more fun things such as editorials!

As for the season itself, it turned out rather bad. Well, to be perfectly honest, it is to be expected when one watches over 20 series! There were a few good ones, but ironically they were the ones I did not have much expectations of in the first place! Continue reading

Spring 2013 Anime Early Impressions – Surprises Everywhere

AiuraCrabNewsNetwork

It took me a while to decide, but I have now settled down with the anime I will watch this season. After previously having watched a whopping 20 series at the same time, with most of them turning out to be average at best, it feels nice to end up with a handful of series that instead are superb. This may change over time, naturally, but right now the spring 2013 anime season has been full of surprises!

Who thought a Devil King working at a fast-food chain would end up hilarious? Or what about Attack on Titan managing to live up to its expectations? And let us not forget the massive hatred towards the anime adaptation of Aku no Hana!

Certainly I cannot be the only surprised one, can I? Continue reading

Makoto Shinkai – Short Films Reviews and Thoughts

ShinkaiEgao2

Last week I wrote about my feelings regarding movies done by Makoto Shinkai. Considering how he is such an interesting creator, I afterwards decided to give his short films a try.

Here are my thoughts.

What do you think of Shinkai? Continue reading

Makoto Shinkai – Movie Reviews and Thoughts

ShinkaiThePlacePromisedInOurEarlyDays

Originally I planned to do complete reviews for each of his four movies, but I soon realized it was futile. Makoto Shinkai’s works are rather hard to properly write about and my reviews were far too similar to each other. This is why I decided to instead sum up my thoughts in a shorter format (call them “half-reviews” if you want).

What I can say is that after having seen everything Shinkai has created, there is nothing but a bitter taste of disappointment left in my mouth. All those praises about Shinkai being the next Hayao Miyazaki cannot be further from my own experiences, especially as I feel that he is regressing as a director as time passes. Instead of evolving, he keeps repeating the same mistakes over and over again. Continue reading

GJ-bu is the Best Anime of the Season

GJbu2

Currently I am watching too much anime, so I did the most rational thing to do and picked up yet another series.

Turned out that GJ-bu actually is the best anime of the season. Continue reading

Winter 2013 Anime Impressions – I Watch Too Much Anime

No more anime, please.

No more anime, please.

As a way to get into the groove of blogging we will now take a look at the winter anime season.

I find it funny that I in the preview post said I would not end up watching a lot and instead spend my time plowing through my anime backlog. By now I should know that I will never be able to not pick up one or two more series than initially planned, but considering how calm this season has been… it baffles me that I picked up so much. Very surprising indeed.

Do you readers also usually end up watching more than planned? Continue reading

Why Shaft is My Favorite Anime Studio

HidamariSketchHeadtilt2

Obligatory head tilt.

To start, I want to say that I am sorry for not having updated for quite some time. I caught the flu and cannot say I was in a state to blog anything coherent. I hope you understand.

Everyone probably has their own favorite anime studio for one reason or another. Mine is Shaft, the studio that is both hated and loved for their unique approach to directing anime (thanks to Akiyuki Shinbou).

I will probably be accused of being an extremely shallow person for saying this, but this happens to be the very reason I love Shaft so much. Continue reading
