Shaft may be my favorite anime studio, but it has been rather quiet from them lately which is weird considering how they usually create new series all the time.
This year we have only had Nisemonogatari and Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb, along with the two movie recaps of Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. Do not forget the special episode of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei for the Blu-ray box sets. We will also have Nekomonogatari Black airing on New Year’s Eve, a four-episode OVA.
These are all only established franchises! Sure, they did a wonderful short based on the video game Kid Icarus: Uprising, but that is not much by itself. I am not saying that sequels are bad, but I feel a bit disappointed when I used to never really know what to expect from Shaft.
Lesbian girls and cross-dressing boys? Pizza monsters? Magical girls with a twist? People living under a bridge? All of these were unexpected.
This is why I am happy that we in 2013 will have Magical Suite Prism Nana and Sasami-san@Ganbaranai, two completely new franchises, with the first one even being an anime original!
Perhaps we will even have more new things by Shaft next year. Because besides the two above-mentioned series, we only have the Kizumonogatari movie and, most likely, the third and final movie of Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica.
I really hope we get more from Shaft next year.
I want the unexpected.
But they have yet to confirm a Prism Nana anime. The trailers could simply be an advertisement schtick, considering how they’ve already released merchandising and credited the trailers.
… true, now that you mention it. It would honestly surprise me if it wasn’t an anime, though. This is probably the lighthearted mahou shoujo Shinbo wanted to make.
But then what’s up with the creepy ghost girl hanging around in the background of the trailers?
A happy creepy ghost.
Sasami-san@Ganbaranai is the only show I’m watching next season (apart from Chihaya 2, obvs), because always always faith in SHAFT! They seem to be one of the few studios that dares to be different these days…
Next season sure doesn’t have much interesting to watch anyway, to be honest. As for myself, I will probably pick up Jojo, Garupan and… Horizon. Good time to check out some older titles 🙂
!!!
I could pick up some shows from previous seasons!
Why didn’t I think of that!?
The Monogatari adaptions are what I’m looking forward to the most 😀
Nisemonogatari was much worse than Bakemonogatari, so I don’t have high expectations. I wonder how Nekomonogatari Black will be, though.
Here I was hoping you found news of a 4th season of Zetsubou-sensei. But no, just the usual “I want something fresh” I’ve seen so many bloggers talk about.
Anyhoo, Prism Nana is a MUST WATCH for me and Sasami-san sounds like another harem that could make me want to barf. CURSE YOU NISEMONOGATARI FOR PLANTING SEEDS OF DOUBT IN MY SHAFT FANBOY HEART! NOW I CAN’T LOOK AT ANOTHER GATARI SHOW AGAIN WITHOUT BEING SKEPTICAL!
The 3rd Madoka film will hopefully make my (and the entire “nation”‘s wish come true) and THAT OTHER MOVIE had better be good.
I don’t really crave fresh things like many others, but it’s always fun to see something new, you know? Especially when Shaft usually did new stuff all the time.
Well… you have the special episode released earlier this year. It wasn’t too bad.
Sorry dood. Even if you coat it with delicious sprinkles, it’s still a request for new and fresh ideas instead of adaptations.
It was a good OVA, yes, but I’m talking about a legitimate 13 episode 4th season. 1 is not enough “Zetsuboushita!”
not all anime can have mature storylines. sometimes its better to have a donut than hard candy all the time.
I don’t really expect mature stuff, so I’m not sure what you’re meaning.
