Thoughts on Daisuki, False Promises and Delays

Note: This post was originally meant to be part of “This Is How You Can Watch Anime Legally in 2014”, written by Justin at the website OASG. It ended up too long, however, so I rewrote it and published it on my own blog.

When it comes to the legal outlets for streamed anime there are few available in Sweden. Essentially, it all boils down to Crunchyroll as the few other alternatives are too weak in comparison. Those alternatives are, in my case, Daisuki and Viewster. Not only do these two have meager libraries, but they also have poor video quality to boot. However, whereas Viewster at least has titles unavailable elsewhere, Daisuki offers nothing of worth which surprises me.

With this in mind, let me share a story regarding my very short experience using Daisuki and a few questions which arose about the platform.

Thoughts on the Disastrous Crunchyroll Reddit AMA

It was a whole lot of nothing.

A few days ago the leading legal English anime streaming website Crunchyroll decided to run a so-called “AMA” on Reddit:

“I’m Kun Gao, the CO-Founder and CEO of Crunchyroll, the global Anime streaming service, AMA!”.

This stands for “Ask Me Anything” and can be used by anyone from your everyday person to the largest of companies. Its purpose is exactly as the name implies – to let users ask relevant questions and learn something about the host – although when it comes to companies, or famous persons, its use begin to muddle.

Anime Viking is No Longer on Crunchyroll

It has been a little over a year since I was first featured on Crunchyroll News, gushing over how GJ-bu charmed me to no ends. Being able to have my texts published on the largest English legal streaming website for anime made me incredibly happy.

Anime Not Receiving an Oscar is an Issue – But Not in the Way You Think

Did you follow The Oscars this year? I personally never follow it, but that does not stop me from seeing all kind of mentions in newspapers or on the Internet. This time around, however, there was one little thing that caught my eye and bothered me for many reasons.

If you have some knowledge regarding the whole Academy Awards ordeal, then you might know that animation has never stood a chance against live-action films. In fact, only three animated films have ever been nominated for the Best Picture award.

Digital or Physical Anime – Which Do You Prefer?

In recent years the entertainment industry has seen some drastic changes to how you acquire media. Not too many years ago, you had to have some sort of physical storage device in order to, for instance, play movies or television programs. VHS, DVD and Blu-Ray; neither of these are required anymore. Providing that you have a good bandwidth and a stable Internet connection, it is today possible to access a vast library of entertainment via your computer or TV within mere seconds. This is all thanks to streaming.

What I want to focus on in this text is anime in particular, although you could argue that what I will say here could be applied to movies too.

Anime Viking is (sort of) on Crunchyroll

Have you visited Crunchyroll these last few months and perhaps stumbled upon a news article that seemed awfully familiar? With three posts from Anime Viking now featured on Crunchyroll, I figured it was time to write a short notice about it.

So, long story short: Anime Viking is now (sort of) on Crunchyroll!

Are Funding Platforms a Possible Future For Anime?

Let me start by telling you a story of a video game company called Double Fine. On 7^th February, they started a fund raising project on a website called Kickstarter, one of many so-called “funding platforms”. The idea of these websites is that you come up with an idea you want to realize, but cannot afford, and you let other people donate money to your project. You could say it is a product paid by its customers.

8thSin: I started fansubbing to maintain my Japanese skills, but I pretty much fansub now because it’s something that I enjoy, and I like sharing anime or movies that I enjoyed with others. It’s a hobby.

Why Do People Fansub? – Part 2

The Internet, a magical place where anything can happen. When it comes to anime, we now got the luxury of having basically any anime we want in our hands in the blink of an eye. But despite there being legal ways to watch anime, people still fansub.

In my first post I, very simplified, brought up some possible reasons as for why people still fansub. Whether they hold true or not is not up to me to decide, because I have no insight into fansubbing. But anyhow, let us play with the idea that we are going to fansub an anime, whichever we would like. It could be Haruhi, Bakemonogatari or something completely else, it does not matter. Now, the question is: what would you focus on when fansubbing?

I would say quality.

This is it. For each little step I take, I go deeper into the dark, scary and unknown territory. All alone, only accompanied by hundreds of distant glances from lurking monsters that are waiting for me to do a mistake and trip over.
