Fantasy Anime League Spring 2013 – MyAnimeList’s Competition is On

Waka knows the deal.

Waka knows the deal.

Have you heard of the “Fantasy Anime League” over at MyAnimeList, a competition of life and death? Of course you have not. Here, go and read about it.

You finished? Good.

Because this time I will claim the crown.

If the link I gave you above was too confusing, then you should know you are not alone. This competition is confusing as heck, or at least it seems so at first. Basically, you choose five active anime and two on the bench. Then there are certain set rules that give each active anime points depending on multiple factors such as how many people are watching it, if it is licensed or fansubbed and so on. If you feel that your anime does not rack up enough points you can swap it with a title you have on your bench.

Sounds simple?

Well, it is not.

You have to guess which anime will be popular over at MyAnimeList, which might potentially be licensed and so on. It is possible to create a whole science out of this competition, that is how complicated it is!

So as a way to test the waters I have created a silly little team that may, or may not, bring me victory. Probably not, but let us hope for the best!

Sadly I was late joining this competition, so I was not able to tell you readers about it beforehand meaning it is no longer possible to participate. However there should be a new round later in fall!

Team Marow

FantasyAnimeLeague2013SpringShingekiNoKyojinShingeki no Kyojin

A popular manga with an anime adaptation that looks deliciously well-animated judging from the trailers? Surely this one is an obvious pick. It may be a safe one, but there is no way to place high without it.

FantasyAnimeLeague2013SpringRailgunSToaru Kagaku no Railgun S

The Index franchise is a loved one and so is the spinoff title Railgun. What speaks against Railgun S is that it is a sequel and we all know sequels will generally gain less followers because, well, they are sequels! But this also works in its favor since only the most devoted fans will watch it and therefore are likely score it highly which gives points!

And considering how the previous season and Index has been licensed, it is highly possible this one will be too. The question is when. Hopefully it will be during this competition.

FantasyAnimeLeague2013SpringUtaNoPrinceUta noPrince-sama♪ Maji Love 2000%

This is my first wildcard and also a sequel. The first season was rather popular and hopefully this one will be too. To have a fujoshi bait it was either this or Karneval, but I decided to put my money on this one. Hopefully it was a smart move.

FantasyAnimeLeague2013SpringDateALiveDate A Live

Here we have yet another wildcard. Supposedly it had a bad first episode, but I am confident in the wide variety of crazy females with superpowers.  Those series usually spawn countless discussions when they actually decide to blast off for real.

Or this one can totally misfire and be forgotten due to how little it stands out.

Bench

FantasyAnimeLeague2013SpringHentaiOujiHentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko

Not only is this this an unsafe bet because of J.C. Staff + Mildly Popular Manga, but also because it starts one week later than most of the other anime. This is why Hentai Ouji will kindly have to wait on the bench till Date A Live most likely fails to deliver.

FantasyAnimeLeague2013SpringSuiseiNoGargantiaSuisei no Gargantia

Gargantia is written by Urobuchi Gen (Psycho Pass, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica), animated by Production I.G and seems like one of the most ambitious anime titles this spring season. However, there is something about it that makes me believe everything will not go according to keikaku.

Call it a gut feeling.

Hoho. I want to join too 🙂 Well, Goodluck! If I were to create my team, I’ll definitely put Karneval in it. It’s supah popular in tumblr. Er– I just don’t know in MAL.

    • Marow says:

Sorry, if I had been earlier I would’ve notified you 😦
It seems like Uta Prince is doing poorly… I should’ve chosen Karneval instead. Then again, it’s early!

      • shiizumi says:

No it’s okay. I’ve been a member of that club but I hadn’t checked any updates from them.

And yeah, it’s still early! Again, good luck 🙂

  2. Yeah, that description was uber confusing. Thanks for simplifying it. I am not that great at guessing what will be popular (this MAL we are talking about), but I think your list is close to what I am thinking. And like Shiizumi, Karneval seems like a decent wildcard series.

    • Marow says:

Predicting what’s popular and not is really hard. What’s “in” and what’s “out” seem to change from season to season.

Glad you managed to understand what it’s about. Took me a long time, so it makes me glad I made it easier for someone else 🙂

  3. […] 100th post was a rather silly one: Fantasy Anime League Spring 2013 – MyAnimeList’s Competition is On. To reach this point it took me about a year and a half, which is fine by me. I write because it is […]
